Hotel Aeropuerto (Dec 8, 2019)

Hi,

Today was a day of introductions of the mentors and students from different schools and areas.  We were given expectation, project details and meeting with out mentor for our projects.  Juan is my mentor and I love to see and feel the passion he has for our project "Incorporation traditional ecological knowledge for wildlife monitoring" which will consist of setting up trail cams in different sites to collect data on the wildlife presence in accordance to, species, population rare species within the area and the preference in forest types that are preferred for species.  Some of the animals that are expected to be seen are: fox, coyotes, raccoons, Coati, possums, different species of birds, chicken, quails, some monkeys, bats, paca, armadillos and there is a possibility to see big cats but not usually.  What myself and some others were excited to see was a sloth but they are hard to sport but will definitely try to find one.  Today Juan spotted a wren and orange chin green parakeets and a hummingbird, which was awesome too see and different fruit trees.  The limitations we will run into will be the memory the trail cams will hold, battery life and bait.  Our typical day is going to consist of hiking into different trails and sites setting up cameras, knowing the functions and operations, explore, knowledge of animal, insect and plant species, collecting the cameras and going over data after a few days and go onto other sites and repeat.  Myself and Leslie tried to do our best to have Juan make the sound a Toucan makes but didn't want to ruin the real experience for us so in just that shows his excitement, thrill and passion he has in this area of expertise that he wouldn't want to ruin it for us when we experience the opportunity.  I am happy and excited that Juan is our mentor.

Also wanted to add that the group of individuals has made it very welcoming, inviting to socialize together, get to know each other to share stories, laughs and interests which has been so awesome.
